As many of you know, having signed our petition and written heartfelt (and much appreciated) letters as we prepared our legal case to relocate Appellation to London Terrace, we’d hoped to have different news to share. However as we all know, events do not always play out quite as they’re planned.
By now you've probably heard that Appellation will be closing its doors (for now) in early August. Before we go, we want to thank all of our customers with a week full of wine tastings, featuring some of our very favorites from over the years. Stop by after work or during your weekend adventures, say good-bye, and taste some delicious wines and spirits!
A beautiful Memorial Day weekend, a stunning late-Spring June, and a very fine Fourth of July weekend all lead up to what I consider “High Summer,” full of sunny days and warm evenings interrupted by just enough rain to keep the lush greenery and reservoirs happy. We slow down a bit, unhurried and not interested in being madly busy every single minute. The unplanned afternoon before us is deliciously inviting. Impromptu activities pop up, many social and significantly enlivened by something yummy to eat and drink.
Not for the first time I find myself in charge of writing the Appellation newsletter for one of the most important dates in the American calendar. I don’t know if this is just fate or some in-joke arranged by the rest of the team (“Go on, make the Brit write again about celebrating American independence”), but I certainly don’t mind at all and, frankly, I’m ecstatic that I feel so welcomed in this wonderful country today!
We are smitten by Riesling, and many’s the time we’ve extolled the virtues of the variety. We’ve written about the wide range of expressions of this noble grape from around the world, going from bone dry and mineral driven to deliciously sweet. We’ve discussed the exceptional value you get for money, especially among Germany’s finest. Finally, we’ve covered the characteristic acidity that makes Riesling arguably the most versatile food pairing wine in the world, equally at home alongside Thanksgiving dinner, light seafood, or even—trust me on this one—a juicy hamburger topped with bleu cheese. Of course you're already a savvy wine enthusiast and know all of this without me rambling on.
All of a sudden, it’s seriously summer. The step slows, and the craving for lightness—be it in entertainment or in foods and beverages—soars. Enter my favorite wines: racy, ethereal rieslings; bright, bubbly sparkling wines; delicate, dry, fruity rosés; vivacious, bracing, light-bodied reds. All are treats in their own right, but also terrific with a nearly endless array of foods: savories and salads, sandwiches and crudités, charcuteries, even chips and dips all spring to mind.
We're honored to be included in Time Out's recent roundup of New York City's 10 Best Wine Stores! We couldn't have done it without you, our loyal customers in West Chelsea and beyond, so here's a hearty thanks for more than a decade of your patronage, company, and conversation. Cheers!
